to practice kumdo you dont need to wieght train. if you do then you probably arent practicing enough to get to the goaol you set. by building muscle you are just making yourself slower and more heavier when actually sparring. stretching should already be taken care of before the actual practice. if you weight train, your chances of becoming faster and lighter are very very slim. it will possibly also restrict the movement needed when sparing and forms with the wooden sword.

Just have to say that frgt10's comments are completely off the mark and entirely wrong. ANY athletic endeavor will require a baseline of strength, endurance, balance, and speed, with a heavy top layer of flexibility and technical skill specific to your activity. It is folly to assume you can train only one or two of those qualities and ignore any of the others.

For information on how to combine weight training with plyometrics, or how to combine static/isometric training with dynamic training (either of which will increase strength and speed at the same time), do a search online for these terms. For one excellent source that provides many articles geared towards exactly these pursuits (as well as dispelling the myth that 'weight lifting --> slow'), please refer to the website www.rosstraining.com and check the articles.

Absolutely, Ninjamom! Resistance weight training and strength training are a boon to any athlete. It increases strenth, stamina, and speed, all key elements in terms of the physicality of Kumdo.

It is also important to remember that interjecting weight training will go a long way to prevent injury. Especially concerning muscle and connective tissue.

Even better would be to buy Ross's books. Develop explosive strength, speed stregnth, and superior conditioning. That can't hurt...
